Cataract Surgery (One Eye): Clear Vision, Not a Minor Expense

SG Flyer.webp

Cataracts are one of the most common age-related eye conditions and a leading cause of visual impairment. Surgery is highly effective—but in Singapore’s private system, it comes with meaningful costs.

What It Costs

MOH-aligned private fees typically include:
• Ophthalmologist fee: SGD 2,500 – 4,500
• Anaesthetist (if sedation used): SGD 700 – 1,200
Premium intraocular lenses (IOLs) and facility charges add to the total.

What’s Typically Covered

Coverage varies by plan:
• Medically necessary cataract surgery is usually covered
• Standard IOLs are often reimbursed
• Premium lenses may be capped or excluded

Insurance Tip

Ask whether lens upgrades are reimbursed at cost, capped, or fully excluded. This is a common out-of-pocket trap.

Conclusion

Cataract surgery restores sight. But insurance structure determines how affordable that clarity is.
