Childbirth Coverage for Expats

Plan for peace of mind during your pregnancy abroad.

Expecting a baby while living overseas is an exciting journey—but it also comes with added complexity, especially when it comes to healthcare. Maternity care can be expensive in Singapore and other global hubs, and not all health plans cover childbirth or pregnancy-related services.

At InterExpat, we help expatriates secure maternity insurance that includes full childbirth coverage, prenatal care, and newborn protection—so you can focus on welcoming your baby, not worrying about the bills.

What Is Childbirth Coverage?

Childbirth coverage (also called maternity insurance) typically includes:

  • Prenatal check-ups and scans

  • Labour and delivery (normal or caesarean)

  • Hospital stay for mother and newborn

  • Postnatal consultations

  • Complication cover for both mother and baby

  • Optional newborn insurance for the first months

This is usually part of a maternity benefit rider within a comprehensive expat health insurance plan.

How It Works for Expats in Singapore

We work with top insurers such as April International, Now Health, and Allianz, who offer:

  • Plans with pregnancy coverage starting after a waiting period (usually 10–12 months)

  • Coverage for private hospitals like Gleneagles, Mount Elizabeth, or Thomson Medical

  • Options to add newborn care from day one

  • Multilingual claims support and mobile app reimbursement

If you're already pregnant, standard maternity insurance won’t cover that pregnancy. That’s why planning ahead is essential.

Important Considerations

Before choosing a plan, make sure to check:

  • Waiting period: Coverage only begins after this time—pregnancies started before then are excluded

  • Annual or per-pregnancy limits: Ensure it covers your preferred hospital’s full cost

  • Newborn inclusion: Some plans let you insure your baby from birth without underwriting

  • Complication coverage: This protects against unexpected medical events

Our advisors will help you select a plan that aligns with your family plans and budget.

Plan Ahead with Confidence

Whether you’re planning to start a family or already expecting, we’ll help you navigate your maternity insurance options with clarity and care.

"Choosing Your Hospital
Private hospitals offer personalized care; public ones provide cost-effective options. Some public hospitals such as KKH and SGH are often regarded as better equipped in case of complications of delivery and newborn care.''
