Home Country Coverage for Expats

Stay covered when visiting the place you still call home.

As an expatriate, your international health insurance should protect you in your new country of residence—but what happens when you return to your home country for a visit? Whether it’s a short stay with family or a long summer break, access to healthcare back home remains essential.

At InterExpat, we help you find plans that include home country coverage—so you’re protected even outside your main country of residence.

What Is Home Country Coverage?

Home country coverage refers to health insurance benefits that apply when you temporarily return to the country of your nationality or legal origin. Depending on the insurer, it may include:

  • Doctor consultations

  • Emergency treatment

  • Hospitalisation and outpatient care

  • Ongoing treatment for pre-existing conditions (if covered)

This is especially important if your home country doesn’t provide universal healthcare—or if you no longer qualify for it as a non-resident.

How It Works for Expats

We work with providers like April International, Now Health, and Allianz to offer flexible coverage that:

  • Includes up to 30–180 days of treatment in your home country per policy year

  • Covers both planned and emergency medical care during temporary stays

  • Allows you to keep the same direct billing or reimbursement process

  • May offer extended options for students or globally mobile professionals

Your main country of residence remains the anchor for your coverage—but many plans ensure you’re still protected when you go home.

Excluded Countries and Limitations

Some insurers may:

  • Exclude the USA or impose surcharges for treatment there

  • Offer emergency-only coverage in your home country

  • Require pre-authorisation for non-urgent care

  • Not cover ongoing treatments started abroad

We help you understand exactly what’s covered in your home country—and what isn’t—so you can plan with confidence.

Travel Smart, Stay Covered

Going home shouldn’t mean going unprotected. Make sure your health plan moves with you—wherever “home” is today.
